New Patients

Welcome to Matheson Chiropractic & Wellness Centre! Our front desk chiropractic assistants will make you feel at ease, as if you were at home, and you can expect to be treated like a member of our extended family (albeit a large one). We will strive to make your visit a WOW experience & to that end, your well being & satisfaction is of the utmost importance to us.

Here’s what you can expect at your first visit:

  • You’ll first have to complete some basic health history forms. One of these is a Consent to Treatment – we ask that you do not sign this form until you’ve had a chance to talk to Dr. Matheson and get any questions answered.
  • We’ll request you watch a short 4-5 minute video about the nervous system.
  • You’ll consult with Dr. Matheson for 15-20 minutes, giving you the chance to share with him details of your general health and specifically what brings you to us.
  • He’ll perform a comprehensive examination consisting of varied orthopedic, neurological and chiropractic tests. Our patients tell us they’ve never had such an in-depth examination before (either from other chiropractors or their MDs).
  • If Xrays are deemed necessary, you will be given the appropriate instructions and prescription form.

Please wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing and bring your significant other if possible (two heads are often better at remembering things than just one). This first visit should take approximately 45 minutes in total. You’ll be asked to return in a day or two so Dr. Matheson can give you a report of his findings and recommendations.

Dr. Matheson will go over his findings (including Xrays if appropriate) with you and will be glad to answer any questions you might have. He will be explaining everything in terms you will easily understand, making use of pictures and models. His goal on this visit is to answer the 4 fundamental questions all new patients seem to be concerned with:

  • What’s wrong?
  • Can chiropractic help me?

  • How long will it take?
  • What will it cost?

He will usually suggest an initial program of intensive care (usually only 2-3 weeks) when treatment will be 3-4 times a week, designed to deal with any pain you might be having as quickly as possible. This program will be followed by some reconstructive care, where treatments are less frequent but still critical.

Dr. Matheson will then ask you to sign the Consent to Treatment form after he explains it to you in detail & goes over any other possible options to chiropractic care/ correction.

Your treatment will then begin. If you choose to be adjusted by hand, you can expect to hear some “popping” noise as the joints of your spine are gently moved, but this is entirely normal. It’s merely gas bubbles moving in the synovial fluid inside the joint. With painless instrument adjusting, there will be no popping sounds. Dr. Matheson always calls the new patient after their first treatment to see how they’re doing & answer any questions.

Similar to laying the foundation of a house, chiropractic care is a process designed to build a new pattern of spinal mechanics. One treatment builds on the one before it, which has already built on the one before it and so on. After your 12th visit, Dr. Matheson will complete a comprehensive assessment to determine the benefits, results and any changes that may alter your ongoing care plan or decrease the frequency of visits.  Since you have committed to some level of care (on your second visit) and have usually paid in advance for that care, you will simply sign in at the front desk upon your arrival each time where you will be given your file to take to a treatment room.

Immediately after your treatment, it’s in your best interest if you would lie quietly for 15-20 seconds to allow muscles and ligaments surrounding the vertebrae that have been adjusted, to regain their normal integrity. Try to get up from the table in a side posture position. Get into your car ‘backwards’ (butt first) and refrain from doing anything other than mild physical activity for 20-30 minutes.
