Concussion Management

female rugby playerAccording to a study cited by the Canadian Paediatric Society, “An estimated 200,000 concussions occur annually in Canada, with children and youth affected primarily.” Rugby, ice hockey and football players are at particular risk. You don’t have to be an athlete, however, to sustain a concussion. Many adults experience this type of brain injury from falls and motor vehicle collisions.

So what exactly is a concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that occurs when the brain experiences acceleration or deceleration within the skull following a significant impact to the head or elsewhere on the body. This impact causes a biochemical imbalance within the brain cells, decreasing blood flow and temporary energy deficits. Symptoms may include loss of consciousness, headache, pressure in the head, neck pain, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, and balance problems, among others.

Comprehensive Concussion Treatment with motus HEALTH

At motus HEALTH, we proudly partner with Complete Concussion Management Inc. (CCMI) to offer industry-leading concussion treatment services and strategies.

Our concussion management services include:

1. Exertional Testing and Sub-Symptom Threshold Exercise Programs

We conduct exertional testing to assess return-to-sport readiness and design exercise programs tailored to individuals experiencing persistent symptoms.

2. Vestibular, Oculomotor, and Cervical Spine Rehabilitation

Our team specializes in rehabilitating vestibular, oculomotor, and cervical spine issues commonly associated with concussions.

3. Comprehensive Testing for Cognitive and Physical Function

We offer balance, reaction time, visual processing, and neurocognitive testing, including pre-season baseline and post-injury/return to sport assessments.

4. Educational Resources

We provide educational resources to help patients, families, and coaches better understand concussions and their management.

During the early stage of recovery, it is recommended to have a period of relatively symptom-limited physical and cognitive rest. The duration of this rest is determined on a case-by-case basis, with research suggesting 24 to 48 hours.

After the rest period, the International Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport (2016) recommends a gradual increase in mental and physical activity under the guidance of a licensed healthcare practitioner trained in concussion management.
